Bio & Vitae

Karen Bilgrai Cohen, D.C., CCH

Chiropractor, classical homeopath, craniosacral practitioner and former midwife assistant — in practice in Santa Cruz since 1982.

I graduated from Palmer Chiropractic College in 1981.

Midwifery

Having my first baby at home, I became involved with the home birth movement in Santa Cruz, California and worked as an assistant midwife, attending births for a number of years.

Craniosacral therapy

My husband and I studied and had preceptorships with John Upledger, D.O. from 1982 through 1991. I specialize in, and produced a video on, craniosacral therapy for infants.

Homeopathy

In 1988 I enrolled in the International Foundation of Homeopathy Professional Course. After beginning my studies, I unexpectedly became pregnant with our third child. Our baby was born six weeks early with a tracheoesophageal fistula; though surgically corrected on his first day, he did not grow and develop normally, and still resembled a newborn at seven months. Every night at 2am he would begin to cough, and we slept with him held upright on our chests.

We saw neonatologists, pediatricians, acupuncturists and osteopaths, but nothing changed. A colleague urged me to see an experienced homeopath in Santa Barbara. After a long and careful interview, she gave a single dose of a remedy. Twenty hours later our child ceased coughing at night, and he had made significant developmental changes by our first follow-up six weeks later.

Undertaking the study of classical homeopathy is a lifetime pursuit.

I was extremely fortunate to have been mentored for nine years by the master homeopath Ananda Zaren, who had successfully prescribed for my child. For twenty-five years I have studied with colleagues in Switzerland, Germany and Belgium. I am very grateful to my current teacher, Henny Heudens-Mast, and to my patients who continue to astonish and teach me through their earnest transformations in healing.
